Chemical composition and feed value of rice straw as affected by the variety, fraction of the plants, and time of straw collection after grain harvest

Studies were conducted on the straw quality of two currently popular rice varieties (MR185 and MR219). In one experiment, the objective was to determine differences in nutritional quality of the cut and stubble portion after combine harvesting of the rice plant. The results showed significant variation in chemical composition between the different portions of the plant. The leaf from the cut portion had higher nutritive quality than those of stubble and whole plant fractions especially in MR185. Crude protein concentration in the leaf of the cut portion of MR185 was 6.79%, acid detergent fiber was 46.8%, total digestible nutrient was 50.4%, and digestible energy 2.22 MJ/kg. On the other hand, the stem of the cut portion had higher fibre content than the stubble and whole plant fractions. The othe experiment traced changes in nutritive quality of straw with delayed collection of up to 30 days after harvest. There was no apparent deterioration in crude protein concentration over the period although acid detergent fibre increased with delay in collection of the straw.
