Coastal reclamation and artificial island: hydrodynamic and water quality modelling

Limited land in coastal zone is unable to support the needs of an ever increasing population. Hence, land reclamation in coastal area has been proposed to meet needs for more land along the coast, as has been seen in Penang, Kedah, and Malacca. However, coastal land reclamation is expected to result in some adverse environment impacts. Reclamation activities would change local flow regimes and alter sediment deposition patterns that might cause siltation in some nearby areas. Physical alteration and destruction of natural coastline have been observed in the past to cause widespread degradation of water quality and damage to ecosystems. In this regard, wetlands, mangroves, seagrass beds and coral reefs are particularly vulnerable. This paper attempts to model the impact of coastal reclamation on the environment. A two-dimensional depth-averaged numerical model AQUASEA, which incorporates a hydrodynamic flow model and a transport-dispersion model is used. Changes to tidal currents and water quality subject to tidal conditions and boundary parameters due to the land reclamation will be assessed.
