Modelling dissolved oxygen in Kuala Kedah - Malaysia

Dissolved Oxygen (DO) is one of the key water quality parameters in a single water body, which includes the estuary. Low DO content will result in negative impacts to aquatic life such as an imbalanced ecosystem, high fish mortality, odors, and other aesthetic nuisances. Generally, 5 mg/l of DO content is considered as the lower limit for a water body to healthy. This preliminary research is conducted in order to model the hydrodynamic aspect of DO modelling in Kuala Kedah (Kedah estuary). The estuary is restricted by a barrage structure blocking the exchange between upstream flow and the estuary. The model is a one-dimensional model based on the concept of Finite Segment Method whereby the estuary is divided into nineteen segments. It is assumed that the mixing processes in the estuary are vertically and laterally (across the estuary) well-mixed. Some secondary data gotten from bathymetry map, admiralty chart, and temperature were used to calibrate the model. A transport model will be applied to predict and simulate the tidal and sectional-mean concentrations of DO in the estuary. Results of the hydrodynamic model will be presented in this paper. Further work is needed to address additional water quality parameters and to incorporate larger spatial and temporal scales in order to understand the interaction between land and sea along this section of the coast.
