Many important ecological and scientific problems fall into the field of partial differential equations (p.d.e.`s). The diffusion equation in particular plays a substantial role in modelling unsteady-state flow, diffusion of material, flow of fluids, distribution of a certain-species population among others (Okubo 1980). Consequently much effort has been devoted to the development of efficient and accurate numerical methods to solve such equations The advent of parallel computers has greatly influenced the numerical methods used for the solutions of these p.d.e`s. This paper presents such innovative ideas and techniques in solving p.d.e.`s particularly the two dimensional steady-state diffusion equation and its unsteady-state counterparts. We describe a preliminary work towards developing a toolkit solving several two-dimensional p.d.e.`s on a distributed computing system.
