Melastoma malabathricum L., (Melastomataceae) or locally known as senduduk is very common herb found throughout the tropic mostly from India, Thailand and Malaysia. Chemical analysis on the leaves, stem and root of M. malabathricum with red or purple petals has been carried out for standardization purposes. Phytochemical analysis has been done to detect the presence of alkaloids, saponins, steroids, triterpenes, flavonoids and tannins. Determination of moisture content using loss of moisture on drying, ethanol and water soluble extractive via hot and cold methods give the value not more than 10%. These analysis also included total ash, acid insoluble ash, colour test and as well as thin layer chromatography. This method may be developed for monographic identification of plant characteristic and quality control of M. malabathricum in herbal preparations.
