A 3 superscript 3 NPK factorial fertilizer trial on Paliu series soil in mature oil palm of Sabah

A fertilizer trial was conducted on mature oil palm growing on Paliu soil of the Rumidi association. The design was 3 superscript 3 factorial, testing N, P and K at three levels. Mean N rates applied were 0, 0.63 and 1.26 kg N per palm per year. Both ammonium sulphate and triple super phosphate increased yield with improved growth as indicated by rachis length, leaf dry weight and leaf area. Mean yield response of 17% and 7% were observed to N and P, respectively. Muriate of potash had little effect on the growth and yield although its levels in the leaf and rachis had significantly improved. No significant interaction on cumulative yield was observed. Nitrogen application increased leaf N but depressed leaf Mg. There were no significant effects of N application on leaf P and leaf K. Leaf P and leaf Ca were increased by P application, while K application increased leaf K, but depressed leaf Ca. Application of NPK fertilizers had also influenced the chemical status of the soil. A drop in pH and an increase in the total and easily soluble P and exchangeable K were observed.
