Sustainability prospects of smallholder mixed farming systems in Bhutan : The Baro-amoeba approach
2004
Samdup, T. | Udo, H. M. J.
Sustainability is considered as a core element in almost every agricultural development programmes in Bhutan. This study attempts to unravel the complexity of mixed (crop & livestock) farming using the systems approach and to operationalize the concept of sustainability in smallholder mixed farming systems in Bhutan, using methodologies such as the Barometer of sustainability and the AMOEBA approach. The findings show that smallholder mixed farming systems are sustainable at the broad context of economic, ecological and societal aspects, however more efforts are required to enhance farmer's income and improve ecological concerns especially soil nutrient balances and forest land degradation in certain areas.
