Growth performance of Acacia Mangium in the established forest-plantations- Peninsular Malaysia`s experience

The Compensatory Forests Plantation Project in Peninsular Malaysia was embarked by the Forestry Department Peninsular Malaysia in 1982 with the main objective of ensuring adequate supply of general utility timber for the domestic wood-based industries.Three fast growing tree species namely Acacia (Acacia Mangium), Yemane (Gmelina arborea) and Batai (Paraserianthes falcataria) were selected. To date, a total of 58,000 ha. had been established in the seven participating states, viz. Johor, Negeri Sembilan, Pahang, Selangor, Perak, Kelantan and Terengganu. This project formed an early experience of large scale establishment of commercial forest plantation in the country. The major species planted was Acacia Mangium, for its promising fast growth rate and tolerance over a wide variety of soils and sites. Along with plantation establishment, a total of 53 Permanent Growth Plots (PGPs) of Acacia Mangium had been established throughout the planting areas, in order to study the growth performance and to formulate the management strategies for the planted trees. Regular measurements had been carried out and data from these plots were accumulated. This paper will highlight the growth performance of Acacia Mangium in these PGPs. Comparison of growth performance were made in terms of Height, Diameter at breast height (DBH), Volume and Mean Increment between the different seed origins and states/sites.
