Production of new vandaceous orchid hybrids: potential and constraints
2003
Rozlaily Zainol, (MARDI, GPO Box 12301, 50774 Kuala Lumpur (Malaysia). Horticulture Research Centre)
The development of orchid industry depends very much on the consistent supply of new orchid hybrids or varieties. Many of the hybrids cultivated here originated from our neighbouring countries. In order to become the main producer of Vandaceous tropical orchids, Malaysia should have its own identity of orchids. Therefore, MARDI has embarked in an Orchid Breeding-program with the aim to produce new orchid hybrids suitable for cut-flower production and pot plants. A number of hybrids resulted from this program will be introduced in detail describing as potential for commercialization. Despite all these potential, the constraints in developing the hybrids experienced by breeder will be addressed too.
