A field experiment was conducted at MARDI Research Station, Serdang to evaluate the effect of three rates of organic fertilizer and three types of inorganic fertilizers on the growth performance and production of starfruit (Averrhoa carambola L.) cv. B10. The organic fertilizer rates were 10, 20 and 30 kg Bio-M soil conditioner while the inorganic types were the existing recommended compound fertilizer rate, the high fertilizer rate currently used by commercial growers and the new proposed fertilizer rates. Results from 1998 and 1999 harvests showed that fruit yield were significantly (p<0.05) higher for the new proposed inorganic fertilizer rates over the existing recommended rate by 2.1 and 2.9 times respectively. The newly proposed fertilizer rate had half the rate of nitrogen and 2.5 times higher rate of potash than the existing recommended rate. Medium level of organic fertilizer of 20 kg/plant/year of Bio-M was proposed to be applied.
