Effect of radiation doses and position in the culm on polystrened Betung bamboo properties

Betung bamboo culms (Dendrocalamus asper) were divided into three parts, namely bottom, middle and top parts. The samples were debarked and free from nodes, and then it were dried to 5-7% moisture content and immersed in styrene for five days subsequently. The bamboo samples were wrapped with aluminum foil and polyethylene plastic, and then it were irradiated with 60Co gamma ray with doses of 20, 40 and 60 KGys. After radiation process, the bamboo samples were also prepared and the replication for each treatment was four samples. The tested physical and mechanical properties were density, swelling, hardness, modulus of rupture and modulus of elasticity, and bio-deterioration resistances were testedto Macrotermes gilvus subterranean termite, Cryptotermes cynocephalus dry wood termite, Dinoderus minutus powder post beetle and Schizophyllum commune fungi. The results showed that middle part of the betung bamboo mostly gave the best results of physical and mechanical properties, and the top part had the most resistance to dry wood termite attack,but the position in the culm did not affect bamboo resistance to subterranean termite, powder post beetle snd fungal attack. The radiation doses of 20 KGy was considered giving the best results of physical and mechanical properties, the most resistance to dry wood termite, to fungal and to powder post beetle attacks, but the radiation did not affect bamboo resistance to subterranean termite attack.
