Finger of Bangkirai wood using PUR adhesives for manufacturing grooved decking panel for exterior use

Bangkirai wood (Shorea spp) with its high density (SG: 0.99) and durable characteristic is commonly used for exterior decking panel. One peculiar characteristic of Bangkirai is that the wood cannot be kiln dried (KD) down to moisture content (MC) below 15%such KD process will cause extensive surface checking. Therefore, the manufacturer has to produce and sell the decking product with MC between 20-30% and this is acceptable for exterior applications. The high MC and density of Bangkirai wood make it difficult to be finger jointed using conventional water based adhesives. The manufacturer has to sell the decking in terms of un-jointed solid panel, and short length Bangkirai woods are wasted and use as fuel wood. With the latest advancement in polyurethane (PUR) adhesives technology, it is possible to finger jointing high MC Bangkirai wood commercial puproses. Samples of commercially produced Bangkirai wood panel were selected for mechanical testing (Modulus of Elasticity-MOE) of finger jointing (FJ) for duration of 4 months. The purpose of this study was to evaluate the consistency of FJ quality and any factors affecting its bonding quality in line with the decking design load capacity. Preliminary results indicate that good FJ product could be produced with specific production process, which are different from using conventional waterbased adhesive. Bangkirai wood manufacturers would benefit from this unique PUR adhesives technology for their higher yields, which significantly increase the value of their operation.
