Impact of the December 2004 tsunami on the coastal and reef fish populations in Kedah waters

Comparative assessments were performed on the fish population data obtained from Kedah waters before and after the tsunami of 26 December, 2004. The reef fish population from Pulau Payar Marine Park and the coastal fish population near Kuala Kedah were investigated. From variance analyses (ANOVA), it was found that the tsunami significantly affected the coastal fish population but not the reef fish population. In general, the biodiversity in terms of the number of species and the mean trophic level of the coastal fish population increased significantly, but overall density and abundance remained unchanged.
