Infections and inflammation of the respiratory tract distal parts are common in the horse.Although the etiology can often be distinguished, the clinical picture is often common.Inflammation of low levels of small respiratory tract is recognized as a common cause of poorperformance in young and middle-aged sports horses. The pathogenesis of chronic lungdisease is not clearly defined. A variety of etiological factors may be involved and theirrelative contribution to disease development varies between different horse populations, andthese factors include nutrition, housing and preventive veterinary practice, primarilyregarding the distribution of infectious agents, but genetic effects should not be excluded.Reliable diagnosis of chronic lung disease is based on anamnestic data, clinical picture, clinical examination, bronchoscopy and allergic testing.
