Diet deficient in quality, quantity and negatively impacts honeybees by decreasing the condition of bee colonies and increasing their susceptibility to pathogens and pesticides. Nutritive deficit is most frequently caused by beekeepers, who deprive bees from ample quantities of honey. In addition, feeding bees on pure sugar syrup causes nutritive/energetic and oxidative stress, but is also an additional factor which contributes to the development of nosemosis. Due to the absence of adequate food in bee colonies, supplements are frequently used. Thus, the effects of ?B+? supplement were tested on colony strength (by assessing the areas of open and sealed brood, honey and pollen/bee bread quantities and the numbers of adult bees) and its ability to control nosemosis. Moreover, the parameters of oxidative stress were measured: the activities of antioxidative enzymes: superoxide dismutase (SOD), catalase (CAT) and glutathione S-transferase (GST), and the concentrations of malonyl dialdehyde (MDA), the marker of lipid peroxidation. Bee colonies which ingested the supplement tested had significantly lower (p<0.01) numbers of Nosema ceranae spores compared to the control group (colonies fed on pure sugar syrup). Based on the analyses of the activities of antioxidative enzymes and the levels of lipid peroxidation it was concluded that bee colonies treated with ?B+? supplement exhibit higher resistance to oxidative stress. To conclude, our results demonstrated the positive effect of ?B+? supplement on the condition of bee colonies at the time of preparation for wintering.
