Effects of cinnamon (Cinnamomum zeylanicum Blume) and cloves (Syzygium aromaticum L.) Essential oils as potential bioherbicides on Datura stramonium L. and Stellaria media (L.) Vill.

All commercial essential oils are selective, contact herbicides that have a good but short-term effect. The aim of the study was to test the herbicidal effect and phytotoxicity of Cinnamomum zeylanicum Blume and Syzygium aromaticum L. essential oils on weed species Datura stramonium L. and Stellaria media (L.) Vill. The research was conducted on plants in controlled conditions. In order to examine a phytotoxic effect, a variant was tested with 1, 5 and 10% (v/v) concentration of essential oils. Plants were treated with hot water (temperature 80-90°C), while the control variant remained untreated. The influence of essential oils on the examined weeds grades was evaluated: 1, 24, 48 and 72 h after their application. Essential oils of cinnamon and clove in the tested concentrations (1, 5 and 10% (v/v)) showed high efficacy in suppressing jimsonweed and chickweed against the application of hot water (80-90°C) as a standard. Phytotoxic changes in the form of turgor loss, chlorotic and later necrotic spots, were determined on the tested weed species 1 h from the application of cinnamon and clove oil. The most effective impact of cinnamon and clove essential oils was at a concentration of 5 and 10% (v/v), and the complete effect in controlling the weeds were determined 48 h after their application.
