The effects of machinery on soil compaction in potato production

The aim of this paper was to determine the influence of machinery on soil compaction in intense irrigated potato production, on the agricultural farm AD Zobnatica near Bačka Topola. Soil compaction leads to increased soil moisture. Bulk density in surface layer (0-20 cm), in the reach of a sprayer, was 1.68 g cm-3 which is considerably more compared to values recorded at points out of the sprayer's coverage (1.53 g cm-3). Furthermore, bulk density of 1.48 g cm-3 was determined at points of harvester tracks, while the values obtained outside that zone were1.43 g cm-3. The cone resistance at points of sprayer's pass was 3.91 Mpa maximum at 5 cm depth, while the compaction with harvester was max. 4.22 at 15 cm depth. Higher compaction was determined with harvester at 10-20 cm depth, while the sprayer caused higher compaction at 5cm depth. The obtained results have shown that there are considerable changes in soil physical properties in potato production and this requires adjustment of tillage and duration of performed operations. From the aspect of irrigation system, the results of this research will contribute significantly to the planning and selection of technology for potato production.
