Studies on developing a new index based on physical-chemical and biological parameters forfisheries manegement in Çatak Stream

A rapid alteration is seen in our country's rivers. This process endangers the continuity of fish, living mostly in rivers, by touching the population of them. Fish stocks living in rivers are under the impact of various physical, chemical and biological factors. For this reason, the fisheries management, which will provide the continuity of fish populations, should consider these elements. In this thesis study, an index, which will be used in fisheries management by considering the physical, chemical and biological parameters in our country's rivers, is aimed to be developed. For this purpose, three different indexes are applied in Çatak Stream, which is placed within the boundaries of Van, for 24 months (January 2014-January 2016). In these indexes, Rapid Habitat Analysis Index (RHA), examining the physical status of river, Water Quality Index (WQI), examining the water quality of river, and Integrated of Biotic Index (IBI), examining the status of fish populations, are used. Totally 31 parameters are examined with three different indexes which are used in the study.In the study, it is stated that scores change in IBI between 70 and 37, in WQI between 90.89 and 60.98, and in RHA between 95 and 25. The relations between regression analyses and IBI, WQI and RHA are presented with equations. By doing the correlation analysis between counted 31 parameters and IBI, the relationship between them and important parameters are defined (p<0.05). The use of parameters which have an important relationship between IBI and a new index called Integrated Biotic Habitat Index are developed. Integrated Biotic Habitat Index considers the status of fish population, the water quality of river, and physical structure of habitat.
