Livestock, a Catalyst for Achieving the Millennium Development Goals. To address growing inequalities in the world the United Nations has initiated the process of the Millennium Development Goals (MDGs) and urged the international community to achieve these goals by 2015. The achievement of the eight MDGs should reduce poverty and improve the living conditions of people in the world. Livestock is important for a large part of the world population especially the poor and contributes substantially to the achievement of the MDGs. Indeed, livestock is a source of employment and contributes to the empowerment of women through income generating activities. Livestock also contribute to carry heavy loads, help cultivate fields and improve nutrition in children. The domestication of wild animal species and the development of aquaculture contribute to reduce wild harvests and protect the biodiversity. The development of a sustainable and a well thoughtout livestock production can positively impact many sectors and can boost economic growth. That can help developing countries to move towards the Millennium Development Goals (MDGs) by 2015. This note also presents the pre-requisite to make effective the contribution of livestock to the MDGs and identify potential adverse effects to monitor.
