Influence of a grain free diet on the blood plasma taurine concentration in English cocker spaniels | Teraviljavaba söötmise mõju vereplasma tauriini kontsentratioonile Inglise kokkerspanjelitel

English. Taurine, a sulphur-containing amino-acid, has many crucial tasks in the mammalian body. It is still classified as a non-essential dietary amino acid for dogs. According to recent publications, low taurine levels seem to be associated with cardiac abnormalities such as dilated cardiomyopathy in dogs. This has been seen in many breeds including American cocker spaniels but has not yet been studied in English cocker spaniels. Further, taurine concentrations appear to be affected by diet type and dietary factors and it has been suggested to be lower in dogs eating a non-traditional such as grain-free or vegan diet. This is problematic as grain-free diets for dogs are currently big part of the dog food market and have gained popularity among the dog owners. The aim of this study was to evaluate the connection between grain-free diet and blood plasma taurine concentration in English cocker spaniels. Between January 2021 and January 2022 twenty English cocker spaniels were included in the study. Owners were asked to fill a questionnaire which included 28 multiple-choice and open questions. Based on the answers on the dogs’ dietary habits, ten dogs were divided into grain-free diet group and ten dogs into non-grain-free diet group. Blood plasma samples were routinely taken from the participant dogs for other purposes, and the left-over plasma was collected for taurine analysis. Taurine concentrations were estimated at the Unit of Food hygiene and safety of the Estonian University of Life Sciences by LC-MS/MS. The results showed lower mean blood plasma taurine concentration in the grain-free diet group, but the difference was not statistically significant. Despite the grain-eating status there was however a statistically significant difference in the blood plasma taurine concentrations between dogs who consumed lamb meat and between dogs who did not eat lamb meat. This finding corresponds with the results of previously made studies. In conclusion, both the diet and dietary ingredients seem to affect the blood plasma taurine concentration in English cocker spaniels. More research is needed to explain how and why this happens, and what are the impacts of low blood plasma taurine concentrations regarding the dog’s health.

Hiljutiste väljaannete kohaselt näib madal tauriini tase olevat seotud koerte südamehäiretega, nagu dilatatiivne kardiomüopaatia, mida on diagnoositud paljudel tõugudel, sealhulgas Ameerika kokkerspanjelidel, kuid inglise kokkerspanielitel pole seda veel uuritud. Lisaks näib, et tauriini kontsentratsiooni mõjutavad dieedi tüüp ja toitumistegurid, ning on oletatud, et see on madalam koertel, kes söövad ebatraditsioonilist, näiteks teraviljavaba või vegantoitu. See on problemaatiline, kuna koertele mõeldud teraviljavabad dieedid moodustavad praegu suure osa koeratoidu turust ja on koeraomanike seas populaarsust kogunud. Käesoleva uuringu eesmärk oli hinnata seost teraviljavaba dieedi ja vereplasma tauriini kontsentratsiooni vahel Inglise kokkerspanjelitel. Ajavahemikus 2021. aasta jaanuarist 2022. aasta jaanuarini kaasati uuringusse kakskümmend Inglise kokkerspanjelit. Omanikel paluti täita küsimustik, mis sisaldas 28 valikvastustega ja avatud küsimust. Koerte toitumisharjumuste kohta saadud vastuste põhjal jaotati kümme koera teraviljavaba dieedi gruppi ja kümme koera teraviljaga dieedi gruppi. Koertelt võeti vereplasma proove tava ülevaatuse eesmärkidel ja ülejääk plasma koguti tauriini analüüsiks. Tauriini kontsentratsioonid plasmas määrati Eesti Maaülikooli Toiduhügieeni ja –ohutuse üksuse laboris LC-MS/MS meetodil. Tulemused näitasid madalamat vereplasma tauriini kontsentratsiooni teraviljavaba dieedi rühmas, kuid erinevus ei olnud statistiliselt oluline. Vaatamata teravilja söömise staatusele oli vereplasma tauriini kontsentratsioonides siiski statistiliselt oluline erinevus lambaliha söönud koerte ja lambaliha mittesöönud koerte vahel. See leid vastab varem tehtud uuringute tulemustele. Kokkuvõtteks näib, et dieet ja toidu koostisosad mõjutavad Inglise kokkerspanjeli vereplasma tauriini kontsentratsiooni. Vaja on rohkem uuringuid, et välja selgitada, kuidas ja miks see juhtub ning milline on vereplasma tauriini madala kontsentratsiooni mõju koera tervisele.
