Heavy metals uptake and disease susceptibility of maize

Maize (cv. DHM 103) plants showed preferential uptake of Zn2+ when grown in sand supplemented with nutrient solution containing different heavy metals. An extraneous supply of Zn2+ (as sulphate) to maize plants induced susceptibility to leaf blightcaused by Exserohilum turcicum [Setosphaeria turcica], but addition of Pb2+ with Zn2+ reduced disease considerably. Zinc, lead and cadmium significantly inhibited mycelial growth of S. turcica at both 5 and 10 鎔/ml. Maximum and minimum inhibition of growth was due to Cd2+ and Zn2+, respectively. The combination of Zn2+ and Pb2+ reduced Pb2+ toxicity, while Pb2+ and Cd2+ together slightly reduced toxicity of Cd2+ which was evident from the better growth of the pathogen in vitro.
