Development of simulation model using system dynamics for sugar industory: Apply to Kitadaito Island

The sugar industry is a complex system primarily consisting of sugarcane production and sugar mill. A systematic method that can deal with complicated relationships over various time periods (from days to several years) is required to evaluate new technologies. System dynamics is an effective evaluation method for the sugar industry. In this study, a computer-based simulation model has been developed. The system variables include cropping, quotas, milling, and various economic factors. In the structure, cropping area is calculated by ratoon rate, cane production by yielding, sugar production by daily sucrose content curves. I apply this model to Kitadaito island. Using real data from 2007 to 2010, simulation result consistent with actual data in total harvest area, total cane weight, end date of milling, total sugar production and production cost of sugar. The model can be used to evaluate new technologies and new methods of crop management.
