In order to determine the compatibility of the Wangenheim prune seedling on a growth-reducing rootstock with 12 cultivars growing in Latvia, as well as the suitability of these combinations for growing at close planting distances, a planting at a distance of 1.5x4 m was established in the spring of 2012 at the Institute of Horticulture. Throughout the study, dead trees were identified and trunk circumferences were measured, as well as the following parameters were evaluated: the yield per tree, average fruit mass and harvest efficiency kg cmE−2. The Wangenheim rootstock had good compatibility with the evaluated cultivars. The most significant frost damage occurred after the winter of 2014 for the cultivar 'Stanley', the wood damage for the cultivar ‘Ance’. The cultivars were sorted into three groups based on the harvest efficiency: high yield cultivars with efficiency above 0.20 kg cmE−2; cultivars with a medium efficiency of 0.11 to 0.19 kg cmE−2; lower efficiency cultivars with efficiency up to 0.10 kg cmE−2. The most productive cultivars were ‘Ance’, ‘Duke of Edinburgh’ and ‘Experimentalfeltet’ in the close distance planting. Cultivars were grouped into three groups according to the crown formation: Group 1 – cultivars with strong crown formation which are unfit for growing in close proximity: ‘Kijevas Vēlā , 'Zarechnaya Ranyaya', 'Aleinaya'; Group 2 – cultivars with the strong crown formation that do not fill their allocated growing space and are more difficult to harvest from: ‘Ave’, ‘Lāse’; Group 3 – cultivars with crowns of the middle strength and good branching, which adequately fill in their growing space: ‘Ance’, ‘Edinburgas Hercogs’, ‘Jubileum’, ‘Oda’, ‘Stanley’, ‘Experimentalfeltet’, ‘Julius’, ‘Kressu’.
