Evaluation of morphological traits of spring barley varieties

The article will present the first results obtained for spring barley selected in Latvia and abroad varieties. The angle of root extension and the number of roots varied significantly among the barleys included in the study varieties. Among the barley varieties selected in Latvia, ‘Ansis’ and ‘Idumeja’ are characterized by narrow roots expansion angles, but the highest number of roots was found for the varieties ‘Abava’ and ‘Ansis’. We must continue improvement of the transparent pot method by reducing the proportion of error variance. It is a prospective method for the evaluation of morphological characteristics of barley not only for different varieties, but also for lines in the early ones in hybrid generations, which allows non-destructive evaluation of a large number of genotypes in a short time, which is an important condition in breeding work.
