Bærekraftig utvikling av Pilegrimsleden | Sustainable development of the St.Olav ways

Interessen for pilegrimsvandring og bruken av pilegrimsleder har hatt en stor oppblomstring i de seneste årene både i Norge og i utlandet. Det økende antallet pilegrimer bl.a. i Spania har krevd utvikling av strategier og planverk for å ivareta bærekraften i disse områdene. Langs Pilegrimsleden til Trondheim har antallet pilegrimer hatt en årlig økning på omlag 20 %, og da leden går gjennom sårbar natur og tett på kulturlandskap øker behovet for undersøkelser som belyser utfordringer og muligheter for en videre bærekraftig bruk av leden også her. Denne masteroppgaven undersøker hvilke typer av situasjoner og bruksmåter som påvirker bærekraften på St. Olavsvegen «Gudbrandsdalsleden» mellom Oslo og Trondheim. Dette inkluderer påvirkning på natur- og kulturmiljøet, holdninger til infrastruktur, bærekraftige tiltak og miljøsertifiseringer relatert til UNWTOs strategi for bærekraftig turisme. Jeg gjennomfører to undersøkelser for å belyse disse spørsmålene og besvarer fire problemstillinger som omhandler disse temaene. Datagrunnlaget baserer seg på en kvantitativ undersøkelse av vandrere på Pilegrimsleden, samt en kvalitativ undersøkelse med ti aktører knyttet til leden. Resultatene fra den kvantitative undersøkelsen viser at det mest viktigste for pilegrimsvandrerne er naturopplevelser og et ønske om å få gå i ro og fred. De 120 respondentene vandrer i gjennomsnitt 16 dager, de fremstår som lite puristiske og uttrykker preferanser av god infrastruktur med god skilting, merkede stier klopplegging og rasteplasser, samtidig som de viser positive holdninger til bærekraftarbeid og miljøsertifiseringer. Statistiske analyser viser at svarene fra norske og utenlandske pilegrimer i stor grad er sammenfallende, men at de utenlandske pilegrimene oftere ønsker «å gå alene», «gå milevis uten å møte andre» samt i større grad mener at det var vanskelig å være miljøvennlig langs leden. Den kvalitative undersøkelsen avdekker synspunkter på at pilegrimsvandring i utgangspunktet er positivt for regionene der leden passerer men at det også kan bidra til negativ påvirkning av natur- og kulturmiljøet knyttet til telting, erosjon på stier fra vann og ujevnhet på sentral infrastruktur. Informantene ønsker derfor et større fokus på informasjonsarbeid for å styrke bærekraftsituasjonen langs leden, samt infrastruktur som viser større hensyn til eksisterende kulturlandskap. Oppgaven diskuterer utfordringer som omhandler prissetting, vertskapsrollen, mangel på søppel og toalettfasiliteter samt utfordringer med allemannsretten. Oppgaven konkluderer med- og anbefaler utvikling og tiltak innen områdene infrastruktur, informasjonsarbeid og kanalisering. Den oppfordrer videre til økt nettverksbygging samt en større bruk av miljøsertifiseringsordninger.

English. Interest in pilgrimage and the use of pilgrim trails has flourished in recent years, both in Norway and abroad. The increasing number of pilgrims in Spain has necessitated the development of plans and strategies to safeguard the sustainability of these areas. Along the Pilgrim trail between Oslo and Trondheim, the number of pilgrims has increased annually by about 20%. This trail leads through vulnerable nature and in close proximity to cultural landscapes. The need for research that examines challenges, and opportunities involved in further sustainable use of the trail must also be addressed here. In this master's thesis I want to uncover indications of, and opinions related to the following topics; negative impact on the natural- and the cultural environment, attitudes towards infrastructure, sustainability measures and environmental certifications, regarding UNWTO's strategy for sustainable tourism. I conduct two surveys and I answer four questions that deal with these topics. The data is based on a quantitative survey of hikers on the Pilgrim trail, as well as a qualitative survey with in-depth interviews with ten informants who work with- or in the vicinity of the trail. The results from the quantitative survey show that the most important factors for a pilgrimage are to experience nature and a desire to walk in peace and quietness. The 120 respondents walk for an average of 16 days and they show positive attitudes to infrastructure, sustainability work and environmental certifications. Statistical analysis show that the answers from Norwegian and foreign pilgrims are generally similar, the exception being for questions in which the foreign pilgrims to a greater extent wanted to “go alone” and “walk for miles without meeting others”. They also believe to a greater extent, that it is difficult to be environmentally friendly along the trail. The qualitative study reveals views that pilgrimage is initially positive for the regions through which it passes, but that there is also some degradation of the natural- and cultural environment; this being associated with camping, water erosion of paths and variation on central infrastructure. The informants also desired increased focus on the availability of information along the trail, as a mean of strengthening sustainability and improvements and development in infrastructure. The thesis discusses challenges within pricing, the role of host, garbage disposal and toilet facilities as well as challenges with the right of public access. It concludes with recommending making developments in the areas of infrastructure, convey information and channelling the use. It further encourages increases in network building as well as greater use of environmental certification schemes.
