SammendragMålet med denne oppgaven var å bestemme biotilgjengeligheten og planteopptaket av kobber (Cu), krom (Cr) og arsen (As) i askeresten fra Cu-, Cr- og As-impregnert (cca-impregnert) og mikrobølgepyrolysert trevirke. Dette for å undersøke om asken fra biooljeproduksjon med mikrobølgepyrolyse som teknikk, kan tilbakeføres til jorden som et gjødsels- og jordforbedringsprodukt når forurenset trevirke blir benyttet som råstoff. Forsøket ble satt opp i form av et kontrollert potteforsøk med raigras (Lolium perenne sp.) som representativ forsøksart for bunnvegetasjon, dyrket i siltjord. Alle pottene fikk iblandet 10 vektprosent aske i de fem øverste cm av vekstmediet, med blandinger av aske fra cca-trevirke og ubehandlet trevirke i forholdene 0/1, 1/6, 1/4, 1/2 og 1/1 (cca-aske/treaske). Det ble også laget til en kontrollpotte uten asketilsetning. Én av behandlingene fikk ekstra fosforgjødsel fordi fosfor kan minke planteopptaket av både As og Cr. Det ble gjort fire innhøstinger: 6, 10, 14 og 17 uker etter såing. Etter 10 uker ble det utført sekvensiell ekstraksjon av både kationer og anioner for å undersøke biotilgjengeligheten av Cu, Cr og As. Konsentrasjonen av Cu, Cr og As samt øvrige plantenæringsstoffer (bor (B), kalsium (Ca), jern (Fe), kalium (K), magnesium (Mg), mangan (Mn), molybden (Mo), nikkel (Ni), fosfor (P), svovel (S) og sink (Zn)) ble bestemt i tørket og oppsluttet gress og røtter med ICP-OES og ICP-MS som analysemetoder.Asketilsetningen påvirket ikke biomassen til plantene hverken positivt eller negativt. cca-asken og treasken hadde pH på henholdsvis 6,5 og 7,6 og hadde en relativt liten påvirkning på pH i vekstmediet. Alle askeblandingene ga en svak økning av Fe, K, P og S, og en liten nedgang av Ni og Zn i gresset. Egenskapene til aske fra pyrolysert trevirke ligner de for trekull ved at partiklene holder sterkt på næringsstoffer og er svært motstandsdyktig mot mikrobiotisk nedbrytning. Dermed kan gjødslingseffekten være svak, men langvarig. Resultatet fra den sekvensielle ekstraksjonen støtter dette. Under forholdsvis normale jordsmonnsforhold med tanke på pH og redoksforhold, vil om lag 1 % av As, 4 % av Cu og 0,5 % av Cr være tilgjengelig for opptak i planter eller avrenning. Veksten av plantene var svak i etableringsfasen. Dette var trolig grunnen til at de høyeste konsentrasjonene av Cu, Cr og As ble målt ved første innhøsting. Konsentrasjonen av Cu, Cr og As nådde aldri over henholdsvis 14, 1 og 2 mg per kg tørrstoff i gress gjødslet med den høyeste andelen av cca-aske. Ingen av disse verdiene overskrider maksimumskonsentrasjonene anbefalt i dyrefor. Trenden i de fire innhøstingene tyder på at planteopptaket av Cu øker over tid, mens opptaket av As og Cr er stabilt. Konsentrasjonen av Cu og As synes å øke med økt konsentrasjon i vekstmediet, mens konsentrasjonen av Cr forholder seg mer eller mindre uendret. Konsentrasjonen av Cu, Cr og As i røttene fra potten med 1/4 cca-aske viste seg å være henholdsvis 4, 40 og 40 ganger høyere enn i gresset. Det var en positiv korrelasjon mellom konsentrasjonen av B og As i gress. Dette kan tyde på at raigras bruker opptak av B som en forsvarsmekanisme mot forgiftning av As, selv om planten står i fare for å bli borforgiftet. Den ekstra fosforgjødselen hadde ingen innvirkning på konsentrasjonen av Cr i gress. Konsentrasjonen av As økte med ekstra P-gjødsel, trolig på grunn av at mer As ble gjort plantetilgjengelig. Effekten på opptak i røttene ble ikke undersøkt.Resultatene fra dette forsøket antyder at aske fra cca-impregnert trevirke kan brukes som jordforbedrende middel, men før slik aske kan tas i bruk er det viktig å dokumentere langtidseffekten av cca-asketilsetning i forsøk som får gå over lengre tid. Opptaket i flere ulike arter bør undersøkes og spesielt trengs det mer forskning på opptak i røtter og allokering til andre plantedeler. Det vil også bli behov for endringer i regelverket, slik at maksimumsgrensen for tungmetaller i organiske gjødselsprodukter også bestemmes ut ifra det som er mobilt og plantetilgjengelig, og ikke bare totalkonsentrasjonen. AbstractThe purpose of this thesis was to investigate the bioavailability and plant uptake of cupper (Cu), chromium (Cr) and arsenic (As) (cca) in the ash residue from microwave pyrolysed cca-impregnated wood. This was done to investigate whether ash from the production of bio oil can be used as fertilizer when energy recovery is achieved through microwave pyrolysis, but where the raw material used is a waste product.The investigation was done by using ryegrass (Lolium perenne sp) grown in pots containing silty soil, as a representative of a forest floor species. All of the different pots had their top 5 cm layer of soil mixed with 10 % (w/w) ash from both cca-ash and wood ash, where the mix of the two different ashes varied in the proportions of 0/1, 1/6, 1/4, 1/2 and 1/1 (cca-ash/wood ash). Also, a control-pot containing no ash was prepared. Phosphorous (P) is thought to limit the plant uptake of both As and Cr, and thus one of the treatments was supplied with additional amounts of P-fertilizer. The grass was harvested four times: 6, 10, 14 and 17 weeks after the seeds had been sowed. The roots from one of the treatments were harvested once; after 10 weeks. In order to investigate the bioavailability of Cu, Cr and As, a sequential extraction procedure (both of anions and cations) of the growth medium was carried out after 10 weeks. The harvested grass and roots were dried and digested. The concentration of Cu, Cr and As, along with other essential plant nutrients (boron (B), calcium (Ca), iron (Fe), potassium (K), magnesium (Mg), manganese (Mn), molybdenum (Mo), nickel (Ni), P, sulphur (S) and zinc (Zn)) was measured, using ICP-OES and ICP-MS as analytical methods.The adding of ash to the soil did neither increase nor decrease the plant biomass. The pH of the cca-ash and the wood ash were measured to 6,5 and 7,6 respectively, and did not alter the pH in the growth medium to a great extent. All of the ash-mixtures led to a slight increase in the concentration of Fe, K, P and S in the grass, and to a slight decrease of Ni and Zn. Ash from pyrolysed wood shares many of the same properties with biochar, in that the ash-particles have a strong affinity to nutrients and that they are highly resistant to microbial decomposition. Thus, the benefits from the ash fertilizer could be slight, but long lasting. The result from the sequential extractions supports this suggestion. Only 1 % As, 4 % Cu and 0,5 % Cr, approximately, will be available for plant uptake or drainage, when the soil pH and redox state are within normal range. During the first weeks after the seeds had been sowed, the plant growth was rather slow. This may be the reason as to why the highest concentrations of Cu, Cr and As were measured after the first harvest. In the grass fertilized with the largest proportion of cca-ash, the Cu, Cr and As concentrations reached 14, 1 and 2 mg pr kg dry matter, respectively. None of these values exceeded the recommended maximum concentration of Cu, Cr and As in fodder. Based on the four harvests, the tendency seems to be that the plant uptake of Cu increases with time, but that the plant uptake of Cr and As has stabilized. The Cu and As concentrations in the grass seem to increase as the concentrations increase in the growth medium, while the Cr concentration stays the same. The root concentrations of Cu, Cr and As in the pots fertilized with 1/4 cca-ash were respectively 4, 40 and 40 times higher than in the grass.A positive correlation between the B and As concentration in the grass was observed. This may implicate that uptake of B is used as a defence mechanism against As toxification in ryegrass, even though the plants are at risk of being B toxified instead. The additional P-fertilizer had no influence on the Cr concentration in the grass. The concentration of As increased, most likely because the surface-adsorbed As was exchanged with P. The effects on the roots have not been investigated. The results from this experiment imply that ash from pyrolysed cca-impregnated wood can be used as a fertilizer in forestry, but that certain precautionary measures needs to be taken. The long-term effects of spreading cca-ash need to be investigated with other time extending experiments, along with the plant uptake in other species. The plant uptake in roots and the allocation to other plant parts are especially important. It may be concluded that it is essential that the regulations controlling the maximum concentration of heavy metals in organic fertilizers need to change so that the maximum concentration is determined by the amount of mobile heavy metals, and the amount that is available to the plant, not through a single-number total concentration.
