Fabrication and characterization of phenolic extract-rosin and phenolic extract-copper-rosin nanoparticles as anti-fungal preservatives and for bamboo and bamboo producuts

Screening of phenolic extracts from barks of four fast-growing plantations tree species as potential anti-fungal bamboo preservative was performed by determining their inhibitory activities against Schizophyllum commube. The phenolic extract with the best performance (PE), which was from Aacacia auriculiformis, was developed by encapsulation in rosin with and without copper nanoparticles (CuNp) for enhanced and sustained anti fungal activity. Encapsulation of PE in rosin alone (PERNp) and with CuNp (Cu-PERNp) afforded encapsulation efficiencies of 89.30 and 84.89% respectively. Both have spherical morphologies with average sizes of 83.3 nm for PERNp and 112 nm for Cu-PERNp. After 60 days of storage, no significant amount of PE was lost for both nanoparticles (P less than or equal to 0.05). Encapsulation was able to improve the antifungal activity of PE against S. commune by two-to four-fold with six times lower actual PE content, which was further improved by addition of CuNP. Leaching of PE was also decreased by around three to six times upon encapsulation while Cu leaching was prevented. For the CAM vascular irritation assay, PE, PERNp and Cu-PERNp did not show any irritation below 10, 50, and 25% (w/v), respectively, indicating that capsulation rendered the phenolic extract more biocompatible and safe.
