Heat tolerance evaluation of promising tomato (S. lycopersicum L.) lines grown under four different environments

Four field trials were conducted to assess the heat tolerance of 30 genotypes of tomato. The control/base temperature trial with an average minimum/maximum temperature of 20/27 deg C was conducted during the cool season of 2014. The three high temperature trials was conducted throughout 2015 during the host-summer (23/34 deg C), hot-rainy (24/35 deg C) and late rainy season (23/32 deg C). Several traits related to flowering and yield were used as heat tolerance screening criteria. Among these parameters, the number of flower clusters, proportion of fruit set and undeveloped flowers/fruits, maturity, number of fruits and number of seeds seems to be good indicators of yield under high temperature stress based on correlation analysis. The correlation values ranged from moderate to high (r= 0.39 to 0.88) at 5% to 0.01% level of significance. Floral abnormalities (i.e. stigma exsertion and antheridial cone splitting) and proportion of aborted flowers were not good screening parameters of heat tolerance. Thirteen genotypes were identified as having good heat tolerance based on at least three of the six selected screening criteria. These thirteen genotypes include the AVRDC line CLN1621L; hybrids Dmax and Arayda; and the OP variety Improved Pope.
