The most common definition of microplastics (MP) - these are plastic particles whose dimensions are up to 5mm. The aim of this paper was to review the methods used for sampling and detection of MP from water. Specialized grids are used for MP sampling. There is no standard mesh size or pore size, this makes it very difficult to compare results. A review of the literature showed that the identification and quantification of MP is primarily performed by visual inspection, followed by visual characterization by chemical. Chemical characterization is most often performed by Fourier Transform Infrared Spectroscopy (FTIR). The number of surveys in MP has increased in recent years, but additional research is needed to contribute to the development of a strategy to reduce the amount of MP in the environment, establish management and remediation measures, and enact legislation.
