The paper presents an overview of the used terminology and methods for determining the drinking water consumption and demand. The presence in practice and literature of various terms and methods for the calculation and presentation of these quantities is pointed out, which leads to the need to define precise and clear terminology and methodology in this area. The paper outlines proposal of the terminology of the methodology that clearly and unambiguously defines certain components of water consumption and demand. Compatibility of presented methodology with the data usually available to water companies, as well as with the IWA water balance methodology is given.
