The aim of this study is to determine trends the concentration of nitrates in drinking water in municipalities of the Mačva district. Water quality monitoring shows that nitrate is present in groundwater throughout much of the Mačva district at relatively high concentrations (>10 mg/l), and in areas of intense farming the nitrate concentration may approach or exceed the maximum permissible concentration (MPC) of 50 mg/L. Current Serbian regulations limit nitrates levels at 50 mg/l. In Mačva district waterworks there was an evident trend of nitrates growth. In Bogatić municipality, high concentrations of nitrate were detected in the waterworks and private wells. Agricultural activity, livestock facilities or sewage disposal areas near the well can potentially contaminate the water supply.
