Immunocastration is an alternative to surgical castration of male pigs to prevent boar taint in meat products. The procedure is feasible for autochthonous breeds raised outdoors up to heavy weights to obtain high-quality products, in which entire male production is not an option. Immunocastrated pigs could benefit from a greater growth potential during the growing period in addition to considerable improvements of animal welfare. Further research is needed to design specific vaccination protocols for heavy pigs taking into account the relevance of maintaining the highest quality standard in meat products.
