In aim to better understand current situation of donkey breeding in Serbia, the situation in surrounding countries is also described in details. In addition to Serbia, a review of current situation has been made in: Slovenia, Croatia, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Montenegro, North Macedonia, Hungary, Romania, Bulgaria, Albania and Turkey. In Croatia, donkey breeds variation and birth registration system have been established. Programs of some donkey’s breed protection were also implemented. In addition to Croatia, donkey breedingprograms were set up in Hungary. In other countries, as well as in Serbia, the situation is unfavourable since there is a lack of well-organized conservation measures.
