The effect of pre-planting storage temperature on plant development of garlic clones

This study was carried out to determine the effects of pre-planting storagetemperature on plant development of garlic clones after planting. Two flowering andtwo non-flowering garlic genotypes were used as plant material. Bulbs of these garlic genotypes were stored at 4oC and 20oC temperatures for 12 weeks before planting. Afterstorage, cloves of both treatments were planted into pots with three replications. Pots wereplaced into temperature, light and humidity controlled growth chamber. Leaf numbers perplant and pseudostem lengths (cm) were determined after 45 days and 90 days of planting.In additıon, sprouting date, flowering, bulb, clove and root development observations wererecorded.According to the results, cloves of the garlic genotypes stored at 4oC sprouted 4-26 daysearlier than the ones stored at 20oC. It was also observed that plants developed from thecloves of all garlic genotypes grew much faster and healthier and bulb formation andflowering (in bolting genotypes) were started earlier. Furthermore, leaf numbers per plantand pseudostem lengths were determined to be higher in plants developed from the clovesof all genotypes stored at 4oC than the plants developed from the ones stored at 20oC. Inaddition, differences between the genotypes in terms of these measured parameters werefound to be significant.In conclusion, it was determined that storage of garlic bulbs at low temperatures beforeplanting influenced garlic development in positive ways and provided earliness, and thelevel of this effect was different among the genotypes.
