Spanish; Castilian. El objetivo de esta investigación fue valorar económicamente el servicio de fijación y almacenamiento de carbono en bosques naturales de fincas privadas. Estas fincas están dentro del marco del pago de servicio ambiental para bosques con manejo sostenible y de protección absoluta ubicadas en La Tirimbina de Sarapiquí y Corinto de Guápiles, Costa Rica y en las cuales FUNDECOR brinda asesoría técnica. Se seleccionaron un total de 27 fincas las cuales se encuentran en un radio de 10 km de las áreas experimentales administradas por el CATIE, denominadas Los Laureles de Corinto en Guápiles y Tirimbina Rain Forest Alliance, Sarapiquí. En primer lugar, se realizó una cuantificación física de la biomasa total y carbono almacenado en estos bosques. Para esto, se tomó la información de las parcelas permanentes de muestreo (PPM) de las áreas experimentales y se seleccionó las especies dominantes. De éstas se eligieron aquellas que contaban con al menos un árbol aprovechado en las dos fincas seleccionadas en que FUNDECOR había realizado aprovechamiento forestal. Así mismo, se identificaron los riesgos y oportunidades asociados a los proyectos de fijación y almacenamiento de carbono en el sector forestal del país.

English. The objective of this research was to calculate the value of carbon sequestration and storage in natural forests of private farMON in Tirimbina of Sarapiquí and in Corinto of Guapiles, Costa Rica. These farMON receive payment for sustainable forest management and for forest protection. In addition, they received technical assistance for forest management from FUNDECOR. A total of 27 farMON were selected which were in a radius of 10 km from the two experimental areas administered by CATIE, Los Laureles de Corinto in Guapiles and Tirimbina Rain Forest Alliance, Sarapiqui. Initially, a quantification of total biomass and carbon storage was carried out. The information from the two experimental areas was used to determine the dominant tree species in the region. With this information allometric equations were generated to relate the total biomass, the total volume and the carbon content of the dbh, the commercial height, total height, stem biomass, stem volume, and the combination of the first three variables. The best tree-level volume model was used to estimate the total volumes by plot and for each treatment in the experimental areas.
