English. The parlour palm (Chamaedorea elegans (Mart.) Liebm. ex Oersted), Arecaceae, an ornamental palm native from Mexico, is cultivated and very appreciated in Argentina. Symptoms of circular to irregular leaf spots of brown to dark brown color with a grayish center were observed in parlour palm nurseries at the Escuela de Jardinería of Corrientes city, Argentina. The aim of our research was to determine the etiology of the disease. The cultural and morphometric characteristics of the fungus associated and the pathogenicity tests indicated that the causal agent the leaf spot in C. elegans in Corrientes (Argentina) was Phytophthora palmivora (Butler) Butler.

Spanish; Castilian. En Argentina, Chamaedorea elegans (Mart.) Liebm. ex Oersted, (Arecaceae), nativa de México, es una palmera cultivada muy apreciada como ornamental. Durante el año 2003, en la Escuela de Jardinería de ciudad de Corrientes, se observaron plantas de Chamaedorea con síntomas de lesiones foliares necróticas, circulares o irregulares, castañas a castaño oscuro, de centro grisáceo. El objetivo de este trabajo fue determinar la etiología de la enfermedad. Las características agronómicas y morfométricas, así como las pruebas de patogenicidad, determinaron que las manchas foliares que afectan a C. elegans en Corrientes, Argentina, son producidas por Phytophthora palmivora (Butler) Butler.
