Seasonal Prevalence of Intestinal Parasites as Bioindicators of Aquatic Ecosystem and their Impact on Histology and Biochemical Parameters of Labeo rohita in Ludhiana District of Punjab

Fish, Labeo rohita were collected during winter, summer, monsoon and post-monsoon seasons from fish market near Buddah nullah and Punjab Agricultural University Ludhiana. The intestinal parasitic prevalence of developmental stage of helminth was highest during summer, followed by monsoon, post- monsoon and absent during winter in market fish and highest during summer and monsoon and absent during winter and post- monsoon in PAU fish. The nematode larva was observed to be highest during winter, followed by post-monsoon season in market and high during post- monsoon followed by winter season in PAU fish with absence of nematode larvae in summer and monsoon seasons in both markets. Cestode larvae was observed to be maximum during post-monsoon followed by summer, monsoon and winter in PAU fish. The intestinal parasitic prevalence of developmental stage of helminth and nematode larva. The cestode larvae was found to be less during summer and monsoon, post-monsoon and winter, post-monsoon seasons, respectively in fishes of PAU as compared to market fish. The intestine of fish infected with cestode larvae showed distorted villi, goblet cell hyperplasia along with sloughing of the villi. The muscle protein content was non-significantly higher and intestinal protein content as well as activity of protease was significantly higher in non- infected fish along with non-significant difference in infected and non-infected fish at both locations.
