Edge effects on remnant vegetation of very humid tropical forest in northern Costa Rica, and their implications for conservation and management | Efectos de borde en la vegetación de remanentes de bosque muy húmedo tropical en el norte de Costa Rica, y sus implicaciones para el manejo y la conservación

Este estudio pretendió detectar efectos de borde en la composición, estructura, y diversidad de cinco remanentes de bosque muy húmedo tropical con y sin perturbación por aprovechamiento de madera, con bordes formados hace más de 20 años y una matriz de pasturas. Se trabajó en el cantón de Sarapiquí, provincia de Heredia, Costa Rica, con suelos de fertilidad moderada o baja. Se establecieron 36 parcelas permanentes de muestreo (PPM) de 0,2 ha y se procuró el establecimiento de 9 PPM por fragmento, distribuidas en transectos de tres parcelas ubicadas en el borde, a 150 m del borde y a 300 m o más del borde. Las mediciones fueron del rodal mayor que 10 cm dap, incluyendo lianas.

English. The present study aimed at detecting edge effects on the composition, structure and diversity of five very humid tropical forest remnants with and without disturbance due to timber harvesting, located in a pastureland matrix. Edges were formed more than 20 years ago. The work was carried out in the canton of Sarapiquí, Heredia Province, Costa Rica, in a zone of low to moderate fertility soils. Thirty-six permanent samples plots (PSPs) of 0.2ha were established, with 9 PSPs per fragment, distributed in transects of three plots, located in the forest edge, at 150m from the edge, and at = 300m from the edge. All stems major who 10cm were measured, including lianas.
