Assessment of yield losses due to missing hills in plant crop [sugarcane; study conducted in the Philippines]

The objectives of this experiment are to quantify losses due to missing hills and to evaluate agronomic behavior of bordered and unbordered stools of P hil 56226 and Phil 6607. The stand of the cane per plot (4 x 5 m) were varied such that the number of hills per inner 2 rows will be 30, 28, 26, 24, 22 and 20 (0, 6.7, 13.4, 20.0, 26.7 and 33.4% missing hill) hills respectively. This was arranged such that a) there is only one missing hill at least between any two hills and b) there are two missing hills between any two hills. Phil 56226 exhibits lower yield when there are 6, 8 and 10 missing hills/plots compared to the control which amount to an average production in yield of 67.58 PS/ha. Unbordered canes gave higher PS/TC than bordered canes which could be explained by the light availability during the ripening period. The highest tonnage was obtained when there were less missing hills although the diameter and weight/stalk produced at unbordered stools were bigger and heavier. This was not enough to compensate for the effect of greater number of stools produced when there are no missing hills.
