Dried fish silage as a protein source for poultry

Fish silage in wet form is presently inappropriate for Sri Lanka, because the urgency is for a dry stuff that is suitable for inclusion in diets for poultry. Two sun-dried stuffs were made from formic acid-ensiled silver belly (Leiognathus splendens) with rice bran mixed in as filler to shorten the drying time; bran was either in parboiled or in raw form, and constituted 55% of the dry weight. These products were compared with silver belly fish meal in a seven-week feeding experiment with 288 broiler chickens; the diets were balanced in fish protein and rice bran contents (7 and 11% respectively). Food intake, weight gain and food conversion efficiency were less on the fish silage diets than on the fish meal diets (p0.01). Judged by the same parameters, raw rice bran was inferior to parboiled rice bran as a filler for dry fish silage production (p0.01). Presence of the fish silage-raw rice bran mixture in the diet increased the frequency of tibial dyschondroplasia in the chickens (p0.001). The effect of deoiling of the fish silage-raw rice bran product was tested in a 10-day feeding experiment with 42 broiler chickens; deoiling slightly improved the food intake and the weight gain of the chickens. It was concluded that undeoiled rice bran was not a suitable filler for sundrying of wet fish silage. Nevertheless, the concept of sun-drying of acid-ensiled fish would be appropriate for Sri Lanka
