A study on seed-borne fungi associated with rice seed and their effects on rice seedlings [conducted in the Philippines]

This study was conducted to determine the different seed-borne fungi associated with rice seed and their effects on rice seedlings. Four hundred seeds of each sample rice varieties such as C-168, IR-26, IR-28, BPI-3-2, IR-1561, IR-30, IR-29, IR-1529, IR-2061, and C-22 were tested using the standard rolled method for seedling evaluation and the blotter method for measuring seed health. The seeds infected by various fungi produce abnormalities such as no root, browning shoot, weak spindly primary root, spindly, pale or watery shoot and decay in shoot and roots. Various fungi associated with the above diseases are: Drechslera oryzae, Trichoconis padwickii, Fusarium moniliforme, Curvularia oryzae, Curvularia lunata and Aspergillus spp which were found to cause 32%, 10%, 5%, 8%, 6% and 2%, respectively seedling abnormalities. Drechslera oryzae was present in 14.3% of the seedlings with decay in shoot and root, followed by Trichoconis padwickii 2.2%, Fusarium moniliforme 2%, Curvularia lunata 1.4%, Curvularia oryzae 1.3% and Aspergillus spp. with only 1% of the abnormal seedlings.
