Influence of alternative management techniques on weed growth and yields of mungbean planted after rice [study conducted in the Philippines]

This study was conducted to monitor the weed problems in a rice (Oryza sativa L.)-mungbean [Vigna radiata (L.) Wilczek] cropping sequence under two different agroclimatic situations: International Rice Research Inst., Los Banos field and Malasiqui, Pangasinan farmer's field. At both sites, land preparation and weed control treatments showed significant yield differences when compared to yields obtained with traditional zero-tillage and no weeding systems. The response to weed control in the farmer's field was greater when insect control measures were undertaken. Across all the tillage systems, one hand weeding resulted in yield increases of about 28% at IRRI and about 39% at Malasiqui. To obtain optimum yields of mungbean planted after rice, at least minimum tillage followed by one hand weeding is essential
