Effects of mite predation on the dried fish pest Dermestes maculatus Degeer (Coleoptera: dermestidac), I: Life History

The life history of Dermestes maculatur Degeer, a pest of dried fish was studied in relation to the predacious effects of a mite population. Pupae were found to be most susceptible to mite predation. The majority of the mites were observed to be attached to the abdominal region in all the three stages of the insect. Egg production per female was reduced to half due to mite predation. The hatchability, pupal and adult emergence from the laid eggs showed 4.4%, 3.1% and 1.4% reduction due to mite attachked compared with the mite-free condition. The study confirmed that the mites were predatory throughout the life history of maculaturs. Adult longevity of mite-infested males and females was shortened to less than half, compared with the mite-free condition.
