Preliminary study on varietal selection using ranking-seven honeycomb design

Varietal selection was evaluated using 14 cultivars which had been known to differ in yield. The seven entries for each set were laid out using the ranking-7 honeycomb design and replicated plot design. In the former, all plants were equidistant (1.0 m apart) and formed hexagonal cells. Each plant occupied 0.87 m2. In the second design, single row plots were laid out using a randomized complete block design with three replications. Row and hill spacings were 1.0 and 0.5 m, respectively. Entries were ranked based on means and percent selected plants for the honeycomb design. In the first set, rank of entries differed slightly in the two designs. However, the best and poorest indicators were similar in both designs.
