Maize intercropping with legume and non-legume crops was initiated to study the compatibility and complementarity effect achieved by them. Among the legumes, cowpea is more shade tolerant but competitive. Better use of resources was achieved when maize was intercropped with blackgram and mungbean producing 74 and 60 percent productivity advantage over monoculture. Higher monetary advantage was achieved through maize-mungbean combination although maize blackgram utilized the land more intensively
