English. Trials on the culture of green mussels (Perna viridis) were carried out from 1979 to 1981 in Laucala Bay near Suva. Growth of the introduced species of mussels compared poorly with that in other countries, although the reason is unclear. Whether the poor performance reflects inappropriate management, improper site selection, or some other factor is a question beyond the scope of the trials. Nevertheless, the trials did show that the predator problem is significant and the lack of natural spawning is a major constraint to the future cultivation in Fiji.
Show more [+] Less [-]French. Des essais d'elevage des moules vertes (Perna viridis) ont procede de 1979 a 1981 dans la baie de Laucala, pres de Suva. La croissance des moules vertes est faible comparativement a celle d'autre pays, pour les raisons encore obscures. Il depasse le cadre des essais d'etablir si ce faible rendement reflete une mauvaise gestion, la selection d'un site inadequat ou un autre facteur. Les experiences ont montre que le probleme des predateurs est important et que l'absence de naissain naturel est une contrainte majeure a Fidji.
