Agroforestry systems for the semiarid areas of Machakos district, Kenya
1984
Hoekstra, D.A.
In Kenya the rapid population growth coupled with limited arable land and employment opportunities in the industrial sector, have led to the growth of the number of smallholder farming in marginal lands. While the increased settlement in these areas provide a basis for livelihood the results are mixed. The ecosystems in these marginal lands are fragile i.e. badly eroded soils due to cultivation on slopes as well as overgrazing and low variable rainfalls, combined with traditional methods of farming and ranching. These factors have led to low standards of living for the population in these areas. A pre-investment inventory study of the marginal/semiarid lands in Kenya was conducted in 1977 and 1978. The main theme running through this study is that major investments in soil conservation works, farm production technology and infrastructure are needed to reverse the decline in life and physical environment in the semi arid lands. Several institutions are now geared to fulfil this goal. It is in this context that the formulation of an agroforestry research project is an important contribution. The research plan discussed in this case study proposes the refinement of results of on station species and provenance studies accumulated in various places. A summary of the diagnostic and design methodology steps taken in preparation of the case study is also presented.
