Some observations on the water pollution of the Chaktai canal, Chittagong [Bangladesh]

The Chaktai canal flowing through the Chittagong municipality area and into the river Karnaphully act as the natural waste disposal system for this industrial city. The present study takes into account the municipal and industrial wastes flowing through this canal. Some physical and chemical characters of the water of the canal were studied and efforts have been made to find out their effect on the aquatic life. It was observed that the industrial and municipal wastes caused high level pollution in the canal. Fluctuations in the abundance of different species at different point of the canal were indicative of the degree of pollution.
