English. Only pearl-oyster culture plays a significant role in French Polynesia at present because natural conditions are generally unfavourable to edible-bivalve culture. The rainy season causes the variations and is the principal obstacle to bivalves that take longer than a year to reach marketable size. Future prospects are uncertain, but it is hoped that at least the local market can be satisfied through culture operations.

Seul l'elevage des huitres perlieres joue un role important en Polynesie francaise a l'heure actuelle parce que les conditions naturelles sont assez defavorables a l'elevage des bivalves comestibles, les variations extremes de salinite, de temperature et d'alimentation etant frequentes. La saison des pluies en est la cause et constitue le principal obstacle a l'elevage de bivalves qui prennent plus d'un an a atteindre une taille marchande. Les perspectives d'avenir sont incertaines, mais on espere que les operations d'elevage pourront satisfaire au moins le marche local.
