Speeding the breeding
1979
One of the techniques available to plant breeders to assist them in developing new varieties of wheat is the utilization of an off-season nursery, which enables them to grow two crops of wheat or other small grains within a 12 month period. The three objectives in the off-season nursery system are to advance breeding material by an extra generation per year; to screen for diseases and adaptation; and to multiply seeds of promising lines. CIMMYT operates a highly integrated system involving stations at Ciudad Obregon, Toluca and El Batan. Several developing countries operate similar nurseries as part of their national wheat improvement programs. The other nurseries discussed in this publication are those found in India, Iran, Pakistan, Turkey, Kenya and ICARDA.
